How do I learn poker as a complete beginner?

Learn the hand rankings, then how a hand plays out, then position, then which starting hands to play. After that, stop reading and start making decisions on practice hands that tell you why you were right or wrong. That order matters! Most people skip straight to playing, lose for a year, and call it experience.

The order that works

Texas Hold'em has about five ideas that do most of the work. Learn them in this order and each one makes the next one easier.

1. Hand rankings, until they are automatic

Royal flush down to high card, plus the part most beginners miss: kickers, and what happens when the board makes the hand for everyone. You should be able to look at your two cards and five on the board and name your hand in about two seconds. That takes an evening of drills, not a week.

2. How a hand actually plays

The blinds, the dealer button, the four betting rounds (preflop, flop, turn, river), and what fold, check, call and raise mean. Learn what a pot is and roughly how big a bet should be compared to it. None of this is hard, but if it is fuzzy you cannot think about anything else at the table.

3. Position

Where you sit relative to the dealer button decides how much you know before you act. Acting last is a real, measurable advantage. The same two cards are a fold from the first seat and a raise from the button. Beginners who learn position before they learn fancy plays win more, and they win sooner.

4. Starting hands

Which hands to play from which seat. A tight, simple set of ranges for each position is worth more than every bluffing video on the internet. The discipline to fold the junk is the first skill that puts money in your pocket.

5. Practice decisions, with the outcome hidden

This is where learning turns into instinct. Take a real spot (your cards, your seat, the pot, the board), make a choice, and get told the better play and why. Do it a few hundred times. The trick is to hide whether you would have won, because the moment you see the river you start judging decisions by results, and results lie. A good fold that would have hit is still a good fold.

6. Bankroll before real money

Decide what you can lose before you sit down, and how many buy-ins you keep for the stakes you play. A bankroll plan is what lets you make a correct call when it hurts.

How long it takes

Reading more does not shorten the last one. Deciding more does.

How to do it without losing money

Learn the fundamentals, practice decisions where there is nothing on the line, then sit down at the smallest real stakes you can find once you have a bankroll plan. Skip the play-money tables. Nobody folds there, so they teach you that every hand is worth a call, which is the opposite of what wins.

Questions people ask

What should I learn first in poker?
Hand rankings first, then how a hand plays out (the blinds, the four betting rounds, fold, check, call and raise), then position, then which starting hands to play from each seat. Strategy only makes sense once those four are automatic.
How long does it take to learn poker?
Hand rankings take an evening. Position and starting hands take about a week of short daily sessions. Instincts you can trust under pressure take a few hundred real decisions with feedback, which is why practice hands matter more than reading.
Do I have to play for real money to learn poker?
No. Real money teaches you fear, not strategy. Learn the fundamentals, practice decisions with feedback, then sit at the smallest real stakes you can find once you have a bankroll plan. Play-money tables are a poor substitute because nobody folds there.
Should a beginner learn GTO?
Not yet. Game theory optimal play assumes you already think in ranges and frequencies. Beginners get far more from position, starting hand discipline and pot odds. Solver study comes later, if ever, for most home-game players.
Can I learn poker on my phone?
Yes. PowerFold Theory for Android has ten plain-English lessons that work offline, practice hands with feedback, and an AI coach you can ask anything. Lessons 1 and 2, five practice hands a day and one Ask Ace question a day are free for good, no card.
